Directed energy systems have the potential to deny, degrade and disrupt electronic systems providing critical services in military and civil applications. High power radio frequency and microwave radiation, when incident upon semiconductor devices, can produce a range of responses from temporary interruption of operations to device destruction. Protecting systems from damage requires a deep level of understanding of many aspects of contemporary electronic engineering.

Two scholarships addressing this are being funded by Defence Science and Technology Group and the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy as a part of the Next Generation Technologies Fund. This scholarship provides $30,000 p.a. pro rata and, if eligible, an additional top up scholarship of $20,000 per annum. The duration of the award shall be for three years with a maximum extension of up to six months (subject to satisfactory progress).
