The Director of Data Intensive Astronomy will lead a team of astronomers, data scientists, and software engineers in advancing astronomical research through large-scale data analysis and computational techniques. This role is pivotal in integrating big data, machine learning, and high-performance computing to address complex astrophysical challenges, aligning with the organisation’s mission to expand our understanding of the universe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy:
    • Develop and implement the division’s strategic vision.
    • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team, fostering collaboration and innovation.
    • Represent the organisation in the scientific community.
  • Research & Development:
    • Oversee research projects leveraging large astronomical data sets.
    • Apply machine learning, AI, and statistical methods to advance research.
    • Collaborate with external institutions and industry partners.
  • Data Management:
    • Ensure robust data pipelines and infrastructures for large-scale analysis.
    • Oversee the use of cloud computing and high-performance computing resources.
    • Promote open science practices, including data sharing and reproducibility.
  • Funding & Resource Management:
    • Identify and secure funding opportunities.
    • Manage budgets and resources effectively.
  • Outreach & Education:
    • Communicate research findings to the public and scientific community.
    • Support educational programs to train future data-intensive astronomers.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Data Science, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • 10+ years in astronomical research with a focus on data-intensive methods.
    • Proven leadership in managing interdisciplinary teams.
    • Experience in securing and managing research funding.
  • Skills:
    • Expertise in big data analytics, machine learning, and high-performance computing.
    • Proficiency in astronomical data tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
    • Strong strategic thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
