How to use SPIRIT

SPIRIT telescopes are accessed and operated in one of two primary ways:

  • SPIRIT 2  operates in ‘live observing mode’. Access requires booking.
  • SPIRIT 3, 4 & 6 utilise a sophisticated dispatch scheduling system. Booking is not required

SPIRIT 2

Telescope Status:

SPIRIT 2 is currently running as a live observing telescope and is available for booking.

Step 1: A login is required to access SPIRIT.

Note: The weekend booking deadline is Friday morning.

Step 4: On the night of your scheduled booking, you can access your booked telescope here:

Important imaging information:

  • Fully calibrated images are provided at Bin 3 only.
  • Available Filters – Clear Red, Green, Blue, B, V and R

SPIRIT 3

Telescope Status:

Telescope Access:

SPIRIT 3 does not require booking. Image requests can be made at any time of the day or night.

Step 1: A login is required to access SPIRIT.

Step 2: Log into SPIRIT 3 and submit image requests using the SPIRIT Scheduler menu item.

New Users: please keep total imaging time to 1 hour or less for your first project. For extended requirements please contact us using the form below.

Step 3: Ensure your email address is added to your request using the Schedule Browser menu item referred to in the SPIRIT Scheduler guide.

Step 4: You will receive email confirmation of completed images. Telescope operations can also be monitored in real time.

Images should always be downloaded using FTP.
Login to SPIRIT 3

Important imaging information:

  • Fully calibrated images are provided at Bin 2 only.
  • Available Filters – Clear Red, Green, and Blue

SPIRIT 4

Telescope Status:

SPIRIT 4 is available.

Telescope Access:

SPIRIT 4 does not require booking. Image requests can be made at any time of the day or night.

Step 1: A login is required to access SPIRIT.

Step 2: Log into SPIRIT 4 and submit image requests using the SPIRIT Scheduler menu item.

New Users: please keep total imaging time to 1 hour or less for your first project. For extended requirements please contact us using the form below.

  • Available Filters – Clear Red, Green, Blue, Ha, B and V.

SPIRIT 6

Telescope Status:

SPIRIT 6 is available.

Telescope Access:

SPIRIT 6 does not require booking. Image requests can be made at any time of the day or night.

Step 1: A login is required to access SPIRIT.

Step 2: Log into SPIRIT 6 and submit image requests using the Scheduled menu item.

New Users: please keep total imaging time to 1 hour or less for your first project. For extended requirements please contact us using the form below.

Step 3: Ensure your email address is added to your request using the Schedule Browser menu item referred to in the SPIRIT Scheduler guide.
This is important in order to receive image completion or error report emails.

Step 4: You will receive email confirmation of completed images. Telescope operations can also be monitored in real time (please note there are NBN satellite internet bandwidth limitations at Mardella).

Images should always be downloaded using FTP.
